Time to Talk Day provides the opportunity for individuals to openly talk about their mental health with others. As a newly launched research society made for students by students, we know all too well that being student can take its toll and self-care is very important. In honour of Time to Talk Day, we have put together some top tips for you to take care of yourself and noted key UCL contacts.
1 - Explore somewhere new As a London university student, there is so much on our doorstep! Take some time out to walk and explore a new neighbourhood, museum or viewpoint. Why not visit the British Museum, National Portrait Gallery or the V&A Museum? Or pop over to Primrose Hill or Greenwich Park for a spectacular view of the city! Improve your mood with a quick break away from London and take a day trip with friends or yourself to another city. Take the train down to the South Coast and visit a seaside town such as Brighton. Or venture up to Edinburgh in Scotland, walk its medieval streets, visit Edinburgh Castle and take in the astonishing views. 2 - Talk to someone This could be a member of UCL Wellbeing or your friends from the societies, lectures, seminars or even the library. A great percentage of students, just like you, are willing to talk and help each other on mental health. Make an appointment with UCL Student Support who can help talk about what is on your mind. 3- Make a schedule for yourself Routine is key! Wake up and go for a walk or exercise. Keeping yourself occupied throughout the day can help relieve mental stress. University life is not just about work but also play. Read a book in a spot on campus, a café or the British Library. A logical and consistent lifestyle will also help with your physical and mental health. 4 - Find a 'hold' for your life A ‘hold’, spiritual support or positive visualisation is what makes your life meaningful. It could be your family, your long-term goal, positive daily affirmation or practising gratitude. Keep a journal. May we suggest the Five Minute Journal - available as an app or physical diary. 5 - UCL Students’ Union is here for you UCL and Students’ Union run a range of wellbeing and mental health events throughout the year. Get involved with Project Active - there are lots of beginner friendly sports activities on offer as well as postgraduate and women’s only sessions. There are also guided meditation sessions that run on campus every Monday and Wednesday morning. You can simply turn up and participate. If you feel you, or someone you know, would like to speak to UCL Student Psychological Services - you can register here. You can also check out the various sources of therapy and support UCL Students’ Union directs students to here.
