What are the benefits of being a Research Mentor?
There are many benefits to becoming a Research Mentor!
What does being a Research Mentor entail? You will independently develop a mentorship project. After having selected your Mentee(s), you will guide them through the project and will be their primary point of contact. This can include:
At the end of term 2 (March), you will also have the chance to participate in our Annual Academic Symposium. You and your Mentee(s) will have the opportunity to showcase your research project on a public platform. How do I develop a research mentorship project? As a Research Mentor, you have the freedom to run a mentorship on the topic of your choice. This can be based on your existing research, tailored according to the stage you are at, or you can choose to base your mentorship on another topic from your discipline. The programme should help you in the work you are doing, whilst giving your Mentee(s) an opportunity to learn. You have the freedom to choose the number of Mentees you would like to take on and the length of the mentorship (between 6 weeks and 10 weeks). |
FAQs |
Does a mentee need to be from the same course/department as the potential mentor?
No - we encourage interdisciplinary collaboration as long as all parties are happy with it.
Can I ask my Mentee/s to help me out with lab work and/ data analysis?
Please seek further clarification from your project supervisor before involving your Mentee/s in laboratory-based projects, or disclosing any sensitive data. Mentees might need to complete risk assessment forms in this case
What is the Annual Academic Symposium?
Marking the celebration of our Connect.ed year, the Annual Academic Symposium will invite Mentors, Mentees and Connect.ed members to present their research on a public platform. It will be held towards the end of the Spring Term at UCL. Further details about the Symposium are released in Term 2 every year.
As a member of the society, is there anything else I need to do?
You have the absolute freedom to choose how much or little you want to get involved with the society outside of the mentorship. You are not required to get involved in anything more than your mentorship project, if that is your preference. However, some mentors find it fulfilling to enhance the student research community at UCL by participating as guest speakers in research panels or leading research-focused workshops.
